The articles are aimed at the younger boy generation, older teen generation and men generation. for example older people are usaully more interested in people like bob gledof.
There are 24 double page spread articles. About singers and bands and what they are doing with their music at the moment. there are also many just about interviewing them in general rather then their music.
There isnt any advertorials that are not clear, many of the adverts are clear to see and the articles are clear to read because they all have a picture and a title at the beginning of the articles. many of the articles are layed out the same way.
The magazine achieves a unified house style by having the same white, orange, red and black colour theme through out the whole magazine, it also has the title, Q with a red sqaured back ground in each corner of every page.
The house style is appropriate to the target audience becuase it is the same colour theme as the title that attracted them to the magazine in the first place. It has uplifting and exciting colours through out. the Q logo in the bottom of each page is a good way of spotting that they go together in one magazine.
The title is called Q because this is the name of the company, it is short and stands out and is easy for the audience to remember and recognize.
The title logo has a big Q in bold white front with a red square behind it as the background of the logo. It is placed in the left hand top corner of the magazine and fairly large.
Yes the magazine has a strap line it is a black border up the top of the magazine, it goes along the whole top row and has white writing o
n it, saying “ the 10 most excitin
g people in music now” the white writing based on the black background gives such a HUGE contrast in colour that it stands out a lot. This is an effective way of catching the reader’s eye.
The main image is a long
shot picture of three celebrities, lady gaga, jay-z and Dave Grohl standing up. Dave Grohl is to the left and a little behind jay-z, with jeans and a black blazer on, staring directly at the camera with is head facing forward. Lady gaga is to jay-z’s right and slightly behind him, with hot pants and a leather bra on she is staring at the camera but saluting at the same time so only one eye is showing. Jay-z is standing in the middle of the other two celebrities with his hands in his pockets and his face turned up so it looks like he’s looking down at the camera. His has baggy jeans and a tight black top on. This reach’s out to the ideal reader identified above because not only is there one of the most popular women in the music industry on the front cover for teenag
e boys to look at and read about but there is also jay-z who is idolised by many teenage boys, he is looking at the camera from up above showing his confidence and showing that he is the dominant one between him and the c
amera. This could give teenage boys a reason to read the magazine and be just like him.
There are not any other images on the cover because this image takes up most of the space. It is a large long shot image taking up the page. When text and titles are added in there isn’t any space for any more pictures.
By the cover lines Jay-z and his new song are promoted, an interview with lady gaga is promoted by the cover lines and so is an interview with Dave Grohl. Information about Brandon Flowers, Arcade Fire, M.I.A, Plan B, Phoenix and The black keys is promoted by the cover lines as well.
Explain the connotations of typefaces, graphics, colour etc.
The colour theme is white, red, black and bright orange. The font of the writing is extremely large and bright with a smaller and darker phrase underneath each sub-heading. The font and colour theme imply a happy, upbeat mood when reading this magazine.
The cover talks to its reader by using text such as “exciting people” by having text like this in a larger font it seems as if there shouting at the reader in an exciting tone! It uses a lot of numbers showing statistics and facts; this makes the magazine as a whole a lot more believable. Its mode of address is extremely upbeat and welcoming.
The cover does not look similar to any others, may other magazines have lots of different images on the front cover, where as this one just has one large one, making it stand out more personally because some times too many images can look too busy on the page. This magazine has a lot to offer compared to other rivals, it has 42 pages of reviews, interviews with ten musicians.
The text is all down one side, making it easier to read. There is a niche product; the music varies for different types. The graphics used are very big and advertise each interview and review well.
Magazine Analysis for Q magazine
General
The company that produces the Q magazine is Bauer London Lifestyle Ltd. I found this out by looking in side the magazine on the first page.
The Target audience for Q magazine is targeted for teenage boys from the ages of 16- 19. Although I went on the publishers website, you could tell this by other ways as well such as the adverts are selling things such as “hair gel”, “x-box games” and “alcohol”. Another way is the music that it advertises; it advertises people like “Jay-z” who relates more to teenage boys in his music.
This magazine costs £3.99. This is shown on the front cover.
This magazine is published once a month, for example it has an October issue, November issue and December issue.
The magazines circulation is names of the singers underneath their pictures. It also say’s what singers are in the magazine.
28% of the magazine is adverts. 72% of the magazine is interviews, or double spread pages about musicians.
