CHOSEN TITLE

Once choosing the four names that i wanted, i realised that i had to sit down and think more about what i wanted the magazine to be like, whether i wanted it to be "pop", "R N B" ect.
Once i had decided that i wanted a POP based magazine with a kind of Lily Allen popstar on the front i realised that my four chosen magazine names were inapropriate and were not suited to a POP magazine.
Definition of pop;
"Pop music (a term that originally derives from an abbreviation of "popular") is usually understood to be commercially recorded music, often oriented towards a youth market, usually consisting of relatively short, simple love songs utilizing technological innovations to produce new variations on existing themes"

After much discussion i come up with;

FUTURE CUT

This is now my Title for my magazine because when cd's are made they are cut and on my magazine im going to have a new muscian so she will be the musician of the future. the font's will be tested out to see which one suits best.

I thought about ways of placing my title, so that it looked fitted to the front picture and magazine.

i have come up with a certain style i like, where the title is behing the models head, here are some pictures.

Target audience and Magazine Names

Target Audience

My target audience are fans of "pop" that would listen to music such as Lily Allen, The Saturdays and Lady Gaga. The magazine is mainly advertised towards girls but will have certain bands in that boys may like such as The Script. The age group for my magazine is, 13-16 year olds. It doesn't have a specific style to it, such as a magazine that only "indies" can read. This magazine is in more favour for those who perfer "pop" but does have indie bands in it such as The script and Scouting for Girls.

Magazine Names

I thought of nine different magazine names;

I asked a group of twenty, ranging from 15-18 to choose their favourite name;

The four most popular names were ;

1. IMPACT
2. TRANCE
3. CHANCE
4.WICKER

I now need to choose between these four names.

Research 2 Kerrang!

Inside

There are 64 pages in the magazine, and 16 pages are adverts. This shows that 25% of the magazine is adverts.

Kerrang has a range of Avertisement categories such as music, clothing, gigs and television programs.

The adverts inside the magazine show what kind of audience withh be reading it, t-shirts and tickets for giggs or rock bands have been advertised alot showing that the audience are people that are fans of rock.

Kerrang has certain catorgories for certain fixtures in their magazine,

Feedback,News, Win, Live Reviews, Features, Album Reviews,Gig guide and K Quiz.

There are 8 double page spreads in the magazine.There are two or three advertorials in the magazine, for instance a small section of the magazine shows whats in the next issue but it could be mistaken for an interview that people think are in this magazine.

The magazine uses a unified house style becuase the font styles and graphics are all consistent through out. On the top left hand corner on the pages there is a title showing what section is being read. Kerrange uses a colour theme yellow, red, black and white! and uses thigs such as bold fonts in capitals through out the magazine. This house style fits in well with the theme of rock and metal music.

Research 2 Kerrang!

At the top of the page, is a strap line, on the top of it there is a qoute from the band The Damened things, "We want to do everything". This attracts the audience straight away by being enticing and luring.
The title is made to catch peoples attention and attract them to the magazine, it has done this by using a contrast of colours. The black title gets put on to a white back ground to make it more vibrant. It enforces brand identity and gives the impression of a BANG! if kerrang is said out loud it sounds like a bang, this is called a onomatopoeia.
The main front picture on the magazine is a picture of the lead singer from "paramore" Hayley Williams, it is a medium close up of Hayleys waist up wards. she has her head tilted to the side and is winking at the camera and audience. This makes the magazine look like its going to be exciting and fun. When the audience see Hayley Williams on the front magazine winking, it makes them want to read on about Paramore and the rest of the magazine.
The big cover line text going across the front image, saying "PARAMORE" with four pictures of the group paramore is made to look extremly distinctive because it is going right across the picture. This is rotated slightly added a slanted effect to it.
Alliteration is used underneath the four pictures, saying, " PLUS, their private photo album revealed!" this makes the readers want to see the photo's inside!
The bar-code at the bottom of the magazine is to idetify the price and what issue it is.
The logo placed at the bottom of the magazine, that is rotated and says " WIN a trip to Barbados to record an album!" is used their to promote the magazine, by having WIN and BARBADOS in larger size writing makes the logo its self stand out and be noticed first. Then the idea of wining a trip to Barbados to record an album encourages the audience to read on and find out how to do it!
The strap line at the bottom has a plus sign next to it to lure the reader into more of the magazine, the plus sign shows that there is alot more then just what is shown, the strap line shows that other things such as parkway drive, deftones, skunk anansie and many more are inside the magazine. This attracts more people that like these bands to the market.

Down the left hand side is four pictures of four bands, all the text and font is the same in the same colour. The graphics are the same all the way down the magazine.
The house style of this magazine front cover is shown by using a colour theme consisting of, red, black, white and yellow!.

Research 1 Q!

Inside

There are 162 pages in this magazine and 23 pages of adverts.

The products advertised are categorised into Qmail, Q50, Now, Soapbox, New to Q, cash for questions, Qquiz and last requests. Article topics such as, bob geldoff, lady gaga, jay-z, Brandon flowers. Russel brand and Katy perry music and marriage are on the list of features.

The articles are aimed at the younger boy generation, older teen generation and men generation. for example older people are usaully more interested in people like bob gledof.

There are 24 double page spread articles. About singers and bands and what they are doing with their music at the moment. there are also many just about interviewing them in general rather then their music.

There isnt any advertorials that are not clear, many of the adverts are clear to see and the articles are clear to read because they all have a picture and a title at the beginning of the articles. many of the articles are layed out the same way.

The magazine achieves a unified house style by having the same white, orange, red and black colour theme through out the whole magazine, it also has the title, Q with a red sqaured back ground in each corner of every page.

The house style is appropriate to the target audience becuase it is the same colour theme as the title that attracted them to the magazine in the first place. It has uplifting and exciting colours through out. the Q logo in the bottom of each page is a good way of spotting that they go together in one magazine.

Research 1 Q!

The cover

The title is called Q because this is the name of the company, it is short and stands out and is easy for the audience to remember and recognize.

The title logo has a big Q in bold white front with a red square behind it as the background of the logo. It is placed in the left hand top corner of the magazine and fairly large.

Yes the magazine has a strap line it is a black border up the top of the magazine, it goes along the whole top row and has white writing o

n it, saying “ the 10 most excitin

g people in music now” the white writing based on the black background gives such a HUGE contrast in colour that it stands out a lot. This is an effective way of catching the reader’s eye.

The main image is a long

shot picture of three celebrities, lady gaga, jay-z and Dave Grohl standing up. Dave Grohl is to the left and a little behind jay-z, with jeans and a black blazer on, staring directly at the camera with is head facing forward. Lady gaga is to jay-z’s right and slightly behind him, with hot pants and a leather bra on she is staring at the camera but saluting at the same time so only one eye is showing. Jay-z is standing in the middle of the other two celebrities with his hands in his pockets and his face turned up so it looks like he’s looking down at the camera. His has baggy jeans and a tight black top on. This reach’s out to the ideal reader identified above because not only is there one of the most popular women in the music industry on the front cover for teenag

e boys to look at and read about but there is also jay-z who is idolised by many teenage boys, he is looking at the camera from up above showing his confidence and showing that he is the dominant one between him and the c

amera. This could give teenage boys a reason to read the magazine and be just like him.

There are not any other images on the cover because this image takes up most of the space. It is a large long shot image taking up the page. When text and titles are added in there isn’t any space for any more pictures.

By the cover lines Jay-z and his new song are promoted, an interview with lady gaga is promoted by the cover lines and so is an interview with Dave Grohl. Information about Brandon Flowers, Arcade Fire, M.I.A, Plan B, Phoenix and The black keys is promoted by the cover lines as well.

Explain the connotations of typefaces, graphics, colour etc.

The colour theme is white, red, black and bright orange. The font of the writing is extremely large and bright with a smaller and darker phrase underneath each sub-heading. The font and colour theme imply a happy, upbeat mood when reading this magazine.

The cover talks to its reader by using text such as “exciting people” by having text like this in a larger font it seems as if there shouting at the reader in an exciting tone! It uses a lot of numbers showing statistics and facts; this makes the magazine as a whole a lot more believable. Its mode of address is extremely upbeat and welcoming.

The cover does not look similar to any others, may other magazines have lots of different images on the front cover, where as this one just has one large one, making it stand out more personally because some times too many images can look too busy on the page. This magazine has a lot to offer compared to other rivals, it has 42 pages of reviews, interviews with ten musicians.

The text is all down one side, making it easier to read. There is a niche product; the music varies for different types. The graphics used are very big and advertise each interview and review well.

Magazine Analysis for Q magazine

General

The company that produces the Q magazine is Bauer London Lifestyle Ltd. I found this out by looking in side the magazine on the first page.

The Target audience for Q magazine is targeted for teenage boys from the ages of 16- 19. Although I went on the publishers website, you could tell this by other ways as well such as the adverts are selling things such as “hair gel”, “x-box games” and “alcohol”. Another way is the music that it advertises; it advertises people like “Jay-z” who relates more to teenage boys in his music.

This magazine costs £3.99. This is shown on the front cover.

This magazine is published once a month, for example it has an October issue, November issue and December issue.

The magazines circulation is names of the singers underneath their pictures. It also say’s what singers are in the magazine.

28% of the magazine is adverts. 72% of the magazine is interviews, or double spread pages about musicians.

preliminary task final

This is my contents page.
i have split my contents into three columns. one side has the stories that are shown on my front cover, the middle column has news about the houses and the third about sport.
i have put a picture of "the head girl" on the contents to advertise her Interview which is in the magazine.
i have kept the school logo in the bottom left corner like i have on my front cover. This will be an indication that this contents matches my front cover.
The colour themes i have used are white, blue, red and black. These colours have been taken from my front cover, so that there is a clear pattern through out the front cover and contents.

Friday, 5 November 2010

This is my final front cover. today i changed things such as back grounds on the writing and the size of fonts. by doing these little adjustments made the magazine a lot more eye catching.

Thursday, 4 November 2010

This lesson i have been designing my text and putting on things that are going to be in the magazine related to 6th form. I have used all the colours for my text that are in the photo, for example the white from the cardigan. I have made sure all the text is in different font and size.
I still have a lot more text to do and will re-post a blog once done.

First Frontcover

This is my picture i have chosen to use as my front cover. My front cover will be advertising a 6th form school magasine. i have used two sixth formers to do this. When i first got this picture i wanted to make it brighter, which i did. i also made the colour of the girls clothes more vibrant.
Once i felt i had done enough editing i got on with doing the text.
I used the colour of the bright purple folder to get a colour for my title "WGSG", i also used the saying we have in our school "Pursuit of excellence" to put on the front cover.
After this i had to start designing more text to go on the front cover.
